Final day on the road

Friday August 19th - Gladstone (Benaraby Rest Area) to Home FKS Caloundra.

After a very noisy and cool overnight stop and free, we decided last night that we needed to be on the road early to avoid all the heavy traffic for a Friday arvo
and start of a weekend. We rose early were up washed and watered and on the road at 0700am this was the plan and it went according to the lad's wishes. Last night there would have been only a handful of caravans however this morning it is a different story there would be at least 25-30 caravans, trucks, utes, buses, tents there(see photos)
Trucks: 3 trucks every minute = 180 trucks an hour last night as you can see why it was so noisy and not alot of sleep had. Looks like it will be a nice day very cool however sun is up and shinning.
There was alot of smoke around from burnoffs this morning (see photo)
Not alot to report on this the final leg of the trip therefore will just add some snippets. There were not alot of caravans on the road until around 0830am when they all started to appear, by this stage we had been on the road for 1.5hr. 19km north of GinGin we started to see the start of the Banana Plantations and fruit orchards, many of the fruit orchards were in full blossum such a pretty sight. (see photos)We stopped at GinGin for a comfort stop and a cuppa, we left there around 09.15am and were just heading out when once again we had to pull over for a large road load.
50kms north of Childers we came across the first of the sugar cane fields these go for kms & kms (see photos), also north of Childers we came across an unusal place name "Goodnight Schrub" no it is not a beauty product but a country town.
This area and into Childers was very beautiful with many many citrus groves (see photo)We stopped at Childers 1020am and refuelled for the final leg home, calling in at Childers for a comfort stop and to take some photos of "The Palace" the palace was a backpackers accomodation however someone lit a fire and the fire raged through the building trapping
many backpackers from all over the world with many deaths, it is now just a memorial to those that lost their lives that dreadful night. We always stop here as it is such a quaint place and so oldy worldy. (see photos) Leaving Childers we drove on through the Wongi Forest Pine Plantaion and onto Maryborough crossing the Mary River (see photo) continued on for Gympie which for us is the final leg being just 1hr north of us, traffic is now starting to increase therefore we decided we would continue on rather than stop again. At Cooroy we reached the dual roadway and this sorted out the big guns and their speedy cars and their no brainer drivers. The weather is still fantastic fine and sunny we text Kerry at FKS to ensure our caravan space was clear so that we could just drive straight in - makes life so much easier. We arrived back home at 1.15pm after 2wks away with no car, caravan issues only Brian's health was the major problem.
Hope you enjoy our blog and looking at the photos and reading about our trip.
