2 July:
Departed Bourke
around 9.30 and headed out along the Kamalouri HWay, once again
blessed with amazing weather we set off along the not so great road
heading for Lightning Ridge. The scenery was still nice and the light
was soft so it was very pretty, some huge paddocks/fields not so much
wildlife was seen today, the odd Roo and Emu and no where near the
groups of Wild Goats that we saw yesterday. As we drove through into
Cobar we passed a mine set back off the road,we called into Cobar
where we only stopped for fuel it was a fairly large country town
much bigger than we imagined. We drove on until we got to Walgett
where we stopped and had lunch on the side of the road, while there
Brian rang the caravan park at LR where we were going to stay to be
told it was full so we tried another one and managed to get a site,
we arrived an hour later, it was an ok kind of park when there is not
alot of choice and all the parks are full you have to take what you
can get The day was stunning clear blue sky no clouds anywhere and
lovely and sunny. Just 10kms out of Lightning Ridge on the
Castleragh Highway you will come across "Stanley" he is an
18mtr high creation, he is made out of scrap metal, the body is made
up of 3 Volkswagen car bodies and his head is built from a pair of
satellite dishes it is quite the welcome to the town of Lightning
Ridge. We checked in and decided to stay for 4 nights. It is a
pretty scruffy town compared to Coober Pedy. They have an artesian
bore hot pools FREE entry 22hrs a day so we will be going each day
for a soak it's 40c that's pretty warm but great for the aches and
pains.
Below photo is us almost ready to leave Bourke
Lunch stop just out of Walgett
