3 July:
Amazing weather
blue skies daily, although the nights and mornings are very cold. We
go over and join in around the camp fire late afternoon early
evenings until about 6.00pm when we head back for tea. Shades of
Coober Pedy here just not the living into or under the
ground/hillside. We took a self drive - drive following the Green car
door (all the self drive tours are marked with car doors of the
appropriate colour green, red, blue, yellow) through town to the lookout
and to see Nettletons shaft that was sunk in 1902-03, from the
lookout you can see views to the Coocorum Opal fields. In the 1970s
"The Can House" was built, early miners built their
shelters out of whatever they could get their hands on.
The information
centre was a great place to collect some brochures on what to do
where to go and what to see, as we had done the underground Opal
tours in Coober Pedy we did not need to do any of these and we did
not get any opals either been there done that got the Opals. Brian
lost his prescription sunnies somewhere at the info centre we called
back the next day to see if they had been handed in but they had not
- buggar. Later in the afternoon we made our way back to the hot pool
for a soak, then back to the van park for a shower wine/beer around
the fire then back to the van to have tea and settle in for the
night.
